Rotation 09.20.19
Welcome back to another edition of the Rotation. This week was a more quiet week in music in terms of albums and EP, but we still were able to get some goods out from the featured singles. So let’s get into it, shall we?
Featured Albums of the week:
Jaime by Brittany Howard
Jaime is the debut solo album from Brittany Howard who is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the Alabama Shakes. This album is a lifelong dream of Howard’s and is dedicated to her late older sister, Jaime who died when she was eight. And even with the dedication, the album is actually not about her sister but rather explores Brittany Howard’s personal identity. With themes around religion, sexuality, trauma, and healing, this album is one that requires attention for the listener. The stand out track for me is “Short and Sweet,” but musically this album is dynamic almost overwhelming at times even and will keep you wanting more. Jaime is heavy. Jaime is beautiful. Jaime is honest. Jaime is necessary.
Lessons in Love by Sinead Harnett
Lessons in Love is the long-anticipated debut album from Sinead Harnett. The London singer shares many personal stories with this album including motherhood, love, heartbreak, and independence. The album does feature many of the singer’s earlier singles which does make the album not as exciting to listen to but she does give us quite a few new tracks. My favorites from the album are both love songs “All That You Are” and “Be the One (Interlude).”
Featured singles of the week:
“Chambers” by Sister.
“Mountains” by Charlotte Day Wilson
“Something’s Got To Give” by Labrinth
“Sugar Honey Iced Tea (S.H.I.T.)” by Princess Nokia

“Buying Time” by Lucky Daye
“My Best Life” by PJ
“What Am I” by Jordan Mackampa

Featured visuals of the week:
The first week with only one video, I’m proud of myself. This week’s featured video goes to Juice by Tobe Nwigwe featuring Paul Wall. This video is super black, super Houston, but still super calming. I don’t know who came up with this concept but the whole aesthetic is perfection from the great color palette, brown-skinned ballet dancers in slides, to his grill.
With so many good singles out this week I suspect there will be some strong albums and EPs in the fall, but in the meantime let me know which is your favorite from this week’s picks. Also, if you didn’t check out last weeks feature on Little Simz check that out here, and the Rotation does feature video reviews on my YouTube channel. If you want to check that out click here. Have a good week, peace!
