Rotation 5.21.18
Welcome to the Weekly Rotation where I share my weekly playlist and what new jams I'm listening to this week! This weekend was crazy so I didn't get to listen to everything in depth, but I did get to listen to new music from some of my favorites. Check out this week's rotation!
Albums & EPs:
My two favorite albums releases were definitely Little Light of Mine by KYLE and Electric Light by James Bay.
I've been following KYLE for awhile and I love how he's growing into his voice and sound. I honestly want there to be more rappers like him for this next generation. His songs all speak to where he's at. The lyrics are authentic. They speak to a young man trying to figure things out and don't ascribe to the toxic masculinity and misogyny that many of his contemporaries or trying to perpetuate in their own music. I respect that! I can't wait to see how this album does because it has great tracks for summer. My favorites are, "OpenDoors" with Avery Wilson and "Playinwithme" with Kehlani.
James Bay is probably one of my favorite artists from England. I've seen him twice now and he always puts on an amazing show. Beyond that his sophomore album, Electric Light is so dynamic. From the start of the album, you can tell Bay is telling a story. The lyrics are raw and sonically this album does go a lot of places but for me it shows his range. My favorites from this album are "Wasted On Each Other" and "I Found You."
Singles:
Quite a few great singles dropped this week. My top three:
- Where Were You In The Morning by Shawn Mendes - Mendes went for the smooth acoustic groove with this one and though he's sad it makes me want to move my body.
- Dinero by Jenifer Lopez feature DJ Khalid and Cardi B - This song is perfect for the summer. I know me and my girls will be bumping this all summer.
- Pull Up on You by Temi Oni and Tierra Whack - the lyrics got me with this one. Listen to it and tell me what you think.
Visuals:
Yall there were so many videos that came out this week from Cardi B with "Be Careful," to Jessie Reyez with "Body Count," to Kiana Ledé with "Fairplay" (which came out last year but is so good)! I have to say my favorite video this week was "Garden" By SZA. One, "Garden" is my favorite song on the album. Two, I'm pretty sure this was shot in Hawaii, and that's my favorite place on the planet. Three, her and Donald Glover look dang good together. SZA looks free as all get out in this video and I'm here for it. Check it out below.
